Autumn Educational Meeting – 17/10/19

OxSCAR is delighted to announce that our next academic meeting will be on Thursday the 17th of October between 7-9pm at Osler House, Oxford. The theme for this meeting will be Global Surgery.


We have an exciting agenda for the meeting which includes a guest speaker – Matt Doe,  a surgical trainee from the Severn Deanery who took an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) in Mbale, Uganda. In addition to our very own OxSCAR Vice-Chair Chris Bretheron. Chris is currently in Malawi doing excellent work in delayed trauma reconstruction


We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at what will surely be an interesting and thought-provoking meeting!

NHS Clinical Entrepreneur programme

The NHS Clinical Entrepreneur programme is a training programme that is designed to offer opportunities for junior doctors and wider health professionals to develop their entrepreneurial aspirations during their clinical training period.

Applications opens 5th March to 31st March.

New Surgical Mentorship Scheme!

OxSCAR is excited to announce that the Surgical Mentorship Scheme for medical students has been launched! This is a collaborative project with the Hugh Cairns Surgical Society. We are looking for current surgical trainees to act as mentors for Oxford medical students who are interested in a surgical career. More information can be found here

OxSCAR January meeting announced!

Please save the date for the next OxSCAR Meeting which will be on Tuesday 22nd January, 7pm, Magdalen College. The guest speaker will be Professor Chris Pugh, the Director of Oxford University Clinical Academic Graduate School (OUCAGS). Professor Pugh will talk about academic career pathways and there will be a Q&A session afterwards. 

The meeting is open to students, trainees, consultants and academics. Wine and nibbles are provided and we look forward to seeing you there.

New OXSCAR collaborative project – Antibiotics in appendicitis study!

We are excited to announce a new potential project that OXSCAR collaborative are hoping to run in the near future. The “Antibiotics in appendicitis” project aims to look into the current use of post-operative antibiotics for patients with simple appendicitis, and in the future to clarify the ideal duration of antibiotics. 

This study is going to be a trainee-led, multi-centre study and we aim to start data collection in the new year. Currently we are putting together a steering group to write the study protocol. We would welcome trainees to join our steering group – this would give you an excellent opportunity to be part of a team to run a regional study.

Opportunity to get involved with OxSCAR!

OxSCAR would like to announce that a number of posts on the OxSCAR committee have recently become available as current committee members move on. The following positions are now available to junior doctors in the Thames Valley region:

– Vice Chair

– Publicity Officer

– Foundation Doctor Representative


If you are interested in applying for one of these roles, please send your application to this email address in the following format – Word document, entitled with the position you are applying for, to consist of a maximum 1 page CV and a 250 word personal statement describing what skills and experience you will bring to the role.  The current committee will vote on the applications and you will be informed of the outcome before the next Educational Meeting.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain research and governance skills, committee experience and to give something back to your fellow surgical colleagues.
